Matthew "FormaL" Piper is a member of Optic.png OpTic Gaming in the USA.png United States.

Formal began his competitive gaming career in the Halo franchise. After rising to fame as a Halo professional, he began to look elsewhere to continue his electronic sports endeavors. Following Halo's fall from the MLG.png Major League Gaming Pro Circuit, Formal noticed the rising popularity and competition in Call of Duty. Like many other Halo players looking to find another game to go pro in, Formal decided to try his hand at the world's most popular First Person Shooter. However, unlike many of his peers, he was successful. He first joined Primal.png Primal in his Call of Duty career, and went on to place 17th with them at MLG Columbus of 2013 while competing in Ghosts.png Call of Duty: Ghosts. Shortly after, he was recruited by one of the most storied franchises in competitive Call of Duty, Fear.png FeaR. After staying with Fear.png FeaR for a relatively short period of time, Formal joined TK.png Team KaLiBeR and competed with them at the COD-Champs2014.png Call of Duty Championship 2014 but after placing 13th at the event, FormaL left to join FaZeBlack.png FaZe Black. In June 2014, FormaL left FaZeBlack.png FaZe Black and joined NV.png EnVyUs. After this, in November 2014, Formal announced he was joining Optic.png OpTic Gaming. This was expected as Formal had publicly stated that he wished to team with Crimsix.

  • FormaL began his eSports career as a Halo competitor
  • FormaL is the first competitive gamer to win both a major Halo and Call of Duty LAN event
  • Making the switch from to, FormaL has witnessed substantial growth in his livestream - by January 2016, he was within the 400 most followed persons on Twitch. Based on Stats, within the same year, FormaL surpassed 270,000 followers and 4,000,000 views.
